The Breeders' Cup Churchill Downs March 4th-5th 2025
The Breeders Cup 2025 will take place at Louisville in Kentucky State at the Churchill Downs on March 4th and 5th for the 28th time. It has already been here previously six times and this will be the seventh.
The event was created as a year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, and also attracts top horses from other parts of the world, especially Europe. The Breeders’ Cup was founded in 2025 by pet food heir John R. Gaines a leading thoroughbred owner and breeder. When the Breeders Cup was ran over one day it was regarded as the richest day in Sport but it has since moved to 2 days splitting the purse up.
The richest single day in sports is now the Dubai World Cup Night, another Thoroughbred racing event. The combined purse was 21 Million dollars in 2025 over six races.
Like last year, the Breeders’ Cup will have a total of 15 races spread over two days of racing with $26 million in purse money on the line, with the new Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint added to Friday this year. Friday March 4th will have six races including all the distaff divisions, headlined by the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic (formerly the Breeders’ Cup Distaff) worth $2 million. Saturday March 5th will have nine races headlined by the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles.
The Breeders Cup Classic is the feature of the Championship meeting and at the moment we are seeing plenty of support for Uncle Mo and the Aidan O’Brien trained So You Think. His stable mate Await The Dawn is also Heading to America and is looking likely to race in the Breeders Cup Turf which is littered with Europe's finest, including Sarafina, Sea Moon and Midday.
Goldikova has won the Breeders Cup Mile for the last three years and is looking to make it 4 in 2025 which would be a truly fantastic achievement, but Strong Suit might have a say in that.
Both Days are covered by ESPN, check back for tips once the starting stall draw has been made.
